This week, 4000 people gave me movie recommendations. I had turned to the internet seeking films that could fulfill my dream of “zero plot, with immaculate cinematography and art direction” on instagram reels. luckily enough for me, several thousand strangers provided movie suggestions- along with debate about media literacy, and a discussion about which films truly meet these criteria.
I did some basic natural language programming after paying a shady third-party comment scraping service which will likely sell my personal information on the dark web, with the help of (lazy, lying, hallucinating) ChatGPT to compile: The Most Suggested Films, as well as the Most Liked Comments that mentioned films.
Now, as mentioned- ChatGPT loves to make things up so this is not hard science. please take it with a grain of Salt…. Saltburn.
Drumroll please… YES Saltburn- the most mentioned film in the comment section was Saltburn, at a whopping 97 mentions.
I did a second table which had the most liked comments mentioning films, because many people probably didn’t duplicate mentions of titles if there was already a comment to “vote” in agreement with. Again- Saltburn reigns.
I’m looking forward to watching many of these suggestions, particularly the ones that do appear (at least, I’d guess- to have plots that are quite good- based on their competitive IMDB ratings. Hello Baraka, Samsara!) As well as some of the fan favourites like Angel’s Egg. And of course, at least a few of the hideously poorly rated ones, for maximum effect and variety. Now, of course I wasn’t serious about Fallen Angels not having a plot- I’m only playing fun.
Have I lost the plot? Will you be watching any of these, with or without having a open shopping tab, reddit threads, and your phone open to the infinite scroll? The internet has spoken, it’s up to you to decide what you make of it.
Until Next Time!
Celeste
I would add “Adaptation” with Meryl Streep to this list
Good grief! 4000 responses! Pretty epic! Kudos on the engagement. I have zero interest in films with zero plot, as I prefer movies with soul ( Princess Mononoke is my favourite ) - and am nonetheless intrigued by "immaculate cinematography and art direction". I see none of my movie mentions are in the processed results here, haha, ^_^. I mentioned 'I ____ YOU', a short film by Sarah Bahbah, and also Toni Takitashi on Axiom films, and finally Giorgio Moroder's version of Fritz Lang's Metropolis with Freddie Mercury and Adam Ant, =). Er...I think all of these have a good plot however - so - oops! Maybe I should have suggested the stunning Resident Evil Outbreak trailer for stunning visuals with no plot, ^_^. Blimey - I cannot even find that on youtube. May have to upload my copy, it's amazing.
